Privacy, in plain language

2048 Cupcakes is built to keep things simple and respectful. There are no accounts and no passwords. Most of what you do stays in your browser. Two things are exceptions, and we want to be upfront about them: we use Google Analytics, and if you choose to join the global leaderboard, the scores and display name you submit are stored on a server. The details are below.
What stays in your browser
Your game progress, personal best, lifetime stats, achievements, chosen display name, and preferences (such as dark mode and whether tile numbers are shown) are saved using your browser's local storage. Your browser also generates a random device ID — a string that is not linked to your name, email, or identity — used to recognise your device's leaderboard entry. Clearing your browser's site data removes all of this permanently.
The leaderboard (only when you choose to join)
Joining the global leaderboard is your choice. Nothing is sent until you enter a display name and tap Save to leaderboard on the game-over screen. When you do, we send the following to our database (hosted by Supabase): your display name, best score, highest tile reached, game mode, and aggregate gameplay stats (games played, wins, total merges, total score, and achievements), along with your random device ID. Your display name and best score are shown publicly on the leaderboard; the other stats are stored but not displayed to anyone else.
After you have joined once, your device's best score and stats are synced automatically when you finish a game, so the board stays current. If you would rather not take part at all, simply don't save a name — then nothing about your play leaves your device. Please don't use your real name or any personal detail as your display name.
Live player count
While you play, your browser briefly joins a realtime channel (also via Supabase) so we can show the "currently playing" count. This uses a random, per-tab key, carries no personal data, and disconnects the moment you leave the page.
Analytics & cookies
We use Google Analytics to understand general, aggregate usage — which pages are visited and broad device and region information (region is approximate, derived from your IP address by Google). To keep the game fast, the analytics script loads only after your first interaction with the page, not on load. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (such as _ga) and processes this data on Google's servers under Google's privacy policy. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party ad trackers. Note that your game data is kept in local storage, which is not a cookie.
Who processes your data
- Google — analytics, as described above.
- Supabase — the database behind the global leaderboard and the live player count.
- Cloudflare Pages — our static host, which may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses) for security and operations, as is typical for any website.
Your choices
- Skip the leaderboard entirely by never saving a display name.
- Clear your browser's site data to erase your local saves and device ID.
- Opt out of analytics using your browser's settings or a tracker-blocking extension.
Children
The game is suitable for all ages. We don't ask for personal information, and the only thing you can choose to share is a display name and your scores — so please don't enter a real name or any personal detail.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
